Mike Sharpe, Director, Business Development
Mike joined the Kansas City Sports Commission in August of 2013 as the Director of Business Development. In this role, Mike oversees all facets of event procurement for the organization. In addition to these responsibilities he handles governmental affairs for both the Commission and Foundation at the city, county, and state levels.
Mike’s background encompasses more than 26 years of collegiate athletic administrative and coaching experience prior to beginning his work with the Kansas City Sports Commission. Immediately prior to joining the Sports Commission he served as the Assistant Commissioner of the Great West Conference (NCAA) for five years overseeing Compliance & Governance, Conference Championships, Faculty Athletic Representative Council, and the Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
For seven years before the Great West Conference, he was the Athletic Director at Avila University (NAIA) where he was responsible for the overall management and supervision of the department including 12 intercollegiate programs and 30 staff with a one and a half million dollar operating budget. Additionally he was responsible for the supervision and management of over 3.3 million in institutional athletic scholarship aid.
Prior to his time at Avila, he served as a collegiate men’s basketball coach for 10 years at three different community colleges (Pratt CC – Pratt, KS; Johnson County CC – Overland Park, KS; Brown Mackie College – Overland Park, KS) and one NCAA Division I institution (University of Missouri – Kansas City, Kansas City, MO)
Mike received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas and his Masters of Arts Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri.
Mike and his wife, Brenda, live in Overland Park, KS and have two college aged children, William (Colorado State University) and Theresia (Kansas State University).
