About Us

chick-fil-a-no-location-200wThe 2017 Kids Marathon presented by Chick-fil-A in partnership with Children’s Mercy returns, giving young runners, Kindergarten through 8th grade, a chance to complete their own mini-marathon on the day of the Kansas City Marathon presented by Garmin.

Young runners will have all summer to train for their own mini-marathon! As part of the fun run experience, participating kids, kindergarten through 8th grade, are encouraged to “train” by tracking 25 miles on their own leading up to race day. The final 1.2 miles, which starts just north of Crown Center, will be completed on race day, October 21, 2017 at 9:30 a.m.Childrens Mercy 200w

Pre-race activities, including music, a mascot race, group stretching and warm up, will start at 9 a.m. Also, make sure to stick around after the race for The Fit-NTDF LogoTastic! Family Fun Zone, full of fun activities and entertainment for the entire family to enjoy until 11:30 a.m.
Kids ages 5-13 are able to sign up in groups of 10 or more through their school/youth sports group or can sign up as individuals with a responsible adult accompanying them!

Individual Kids Marathon Registration

Each participant must pre-register. Individual registration is $20 per child.

Paper registration forms are only available upon request. Please email kidsmarathon@kcmarathon.org to request one. All mail-in entries must be postmarked by October 13.

2016_boy_medalTo ensure the safety of all participants of the 2017 Kids Marathon presented by Chick-fil-A in partnership with Children’s Mercy, we require that any parent/guardian who may wish to pick up their child at the finish line and/or run with their child on the course please sign the waiver included in the participant registration to receive a wrist band. In order to pick up your child or join them on the course you must have a wrist band corresponding to your child’s bib number. Wrist bands will be distributed at packet pick up. There is no additional cost for parents to be on the course.

ONLY ADULTS WITH A SIGNED WAIVER AND CORRESPONDING WRIST BAND WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE RACE COURSE.

Race day activities start at 9 a.m. and the race will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 21.

NOTE: There will be NO race day registration or packet pickup. All runners must pick up their race packet at the Health & Fitness Expo on Thursday or Friday.  Your last chance to register is Friday night at the Expo.Registration will be $25 at the Expo if you still need to register.

The Weight Management team from Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics has created a handy Training Guide with helpful tips to prepare before and on race day. This is all the information you need to have a safe and fun training experience.

2016_group_exercisingQUICK TRAINING TIPS

  • On a safe secure route by parents, coaches, mentors or teachers, the first 25 miles will be run in quarter-mile, half-mile or one mile increments.
  • Mileage tracking will be on the “honor system” and kids will get the most and be prepared for the marathon by tracking their miles honestly.
  • The final 1.2 miles of the kids’ marathon will be completed on race day, Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 9:30 a.m.
    • Parents, coaches, mentors or teachers may accompany their marathoner on the 1.2 mile run across the finish line, but they must have a wrist band to be on the course and must sign a waiver to receive a wrist band.  See information under registration.
    • After crossing the finish line, the child will proceed through a secure finisher chute where they will meet mom, dad, coach, mentor or teacher. Each finisher will receive a Kids’ Marathon Finisher medal!

26.2 MILE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE

Has your child or runner completed the 25 miles of training/ tracking, plus ran in the 1.2 mile race on race day? That means they completed their first marathon! Print off this certificate of completion and reward them for all their hard work!

You can also turn in the training log at packet pickup and have your certificate printed there.

Packet Pickup

Location: TBA

Date: Thursday, October 19 from 3-8 p.m. and Friday, October 20 from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Kids Marathon Booth:

For individual participants, please come to the Kids Marathon packet pickup booth, this is separate from other race booths. Turn in your training log at packet pickup to receive your “certificate of completion” which will be printed on site.

For kids participating as a part of a team, the Team Coach will pick up the team packets and T-shirts and will make arrangements to distribute to team members.

The Fit-Tastic! Family Fun Zone

We are excited to tell everyone about ALL of the activities we will be having at the 12345 Fit-Tastic! Family Fun Festival! There will be a musical playground, obstacle course, human spheres course, face painting stations, art station, the Zoomobile, special activities provided by Happy Faces Entertainment and SO MUCH MORE! So make sure you come by after the race and join in on the fun!

NOTE: Pre-race activities, including music, a mascot race, group stretching and warm up, will start at 9 a.m.

MASCOT RACES

Come out early and cheer on your favorite high school and professional mascot. Every year to kick off our Kids Marathon race, we invite mascots from around the area for their own fun race as well as have them lead us in a warm-up! Pre-race activities start at 9 a.m. Race starts at 9:30 a.m.

Volunteers for Kids Marathon

To make the 2017 Kids Marathon presented by Chick-fil-A in partnership with Children’s Mercy a success, many volunteers are needed. Groups are encouraged to volunteer together for the event.

  1. What is the Kids Marathon?
    • The Kids Marathon presented by Chick-Fil-A in partnership with Children’s Mercy is a chance for kids, kindergarten through 8th grade, to train and then complete their own mini-marathon on the day of the Kansas City Marathon presented by Garmin.
  2. How does the Kids Marathon work?
    • Young runners will have all summer, and part of fall, to train for their own mini-marathon. As part of the experience, participating kids are encouraged to ‘train’ by tracking 25 miles on their own mile training log, leading up to the event. The final 1.2 miles will be completed on race day making a total of 26.2 miles!
  1. Do the kids get anything for participating?
    • Each participant will receive an official finisher’s certificate, official Kids Marathon T-shirt, participant goodie bag and finisher medal.
  2. What time does the Kids Marathon start?
    •  The race starts at 9:30 a.m. Warm up and mascot races start at 9 a.m.
  1. Where does the Kids Marathon start and finish?
    • The Kids Marathon will start and finish on the corner of Main and Pershing.
  1. Are there other activities for kids to do?
    • Yes, at 9 a.m., kids can watch the mascot race and join in a group warm up.  There will be lots of entertainment at the Fit-Tastic! Family Fun Festival including Happy Faces Entertainment, face painting and a musical playground!  The activities and entertainment will conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m.
  1. Is there a group registration option?
    • Yes, kids ages 5-15 are able to sign up in groups or teams of 10 or more through their school, youth sports team, or youth group.

    • Yes, packet pickup takes place at the same time and location as the Kansas City Marathon presented by Garmin, which is Thursday, October 19 from 3-8 p.m. and Friday, October 20 from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.  There is no packet pickup on race day.
  1. How does packet pickup work?
    • Come to the Kids Marathon booth at the Health & Fitness Expo. There, you will turn in your training log(s) to receive your certificate of completion along with your race T-shirt, bib number, and goodie bag.
  1. How many runners do you expect for the Kids Marathon?
    • Around 1,500 between individual participants and teams.
