25th Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K Run is more than just a run

Stephanie-Lankford-10-2013-WebThanksgiving is a time for thanks and a time for gathering together with close friends, family and communities. Thanksgiving is 2014 logos finalsprobably my favorite holiday of the year. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what you do, who doesn’t enjoy their own version of a warm cooked meal with people you care about?

With Thanksgiving also comes the annual Thanksgiving Day 5K Run & Family Stroll presented by Sprint. This race has become somewhat of a tradition for many families throughout the greater Kansas City region. Families come early to gather and prep for what is an extremely family-oriented race for those of all ages!

This year the 25th Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K Run & Family Stroll presented by Sprint will once again make its mark on Sprint Campus as one of the biggest Thanksgiving Day races in the city. But what makes this year extra special is the new found partnership with Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph to help them during the holiday season.

Growing up in Kansas City, I am quite familiar with Catholic Charities. I recall doing a variety of fundraisers and different drives for them throughout the years. This year the Kansas City Sports Commission is partnering up with Catholic Charities for a Needs Drive.

Catholic Charities works to reduce and prevent poverty in our neighborhoods and our community through meaningful programs focused oncatholic charities logo-130 helping individuals and families find a path out of poverty — permanently. These valuable programs include emergency assistance with food and clothing, workforce readiness and job placement, financial literacy, homelessness prevention and so many more.

T-Day FamilyHolidays, though exciting, can be extremely difficult on some and this is our way to help out a wide span of people in our city, not just those who participate in our family-friendly 5K. Donations of children’s toys and non-perishable items will be accepted this week at packet pickup held at Dick’s Sporting Goods at Town Center on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Every donation will be given to Catholic Charities of Kansas City – St. Joseph to assist the greater Kansas City area during this holiday season. The impact of Catholic Charities is felt every day in our community. Annually, the agency assists more than 150,000 people of all faiths, ages, ethnicities and economic backgrounds.
