The KC Sports Commission lands the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship
The KC Sports Commission, UMKC, the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Kansas City and the Sprint Center were bid partners in securing the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships at the Sprint Center. The championship will be played December 16-18, 2010. Last year’s championship drew a record crowd of 17,430 to Omaha’s Qwest Center for the semifinals, a lineup that included Nebraska against Penn State.
“This is a huge event we have targeted for a long time,” said Cindy Smith, director of national events for the Kansas City Sports Commission. “This is why we led the efforts to construct a new downtown arena.”
The economic impact of the event is put at more than $5 million with more than 15,000 hotel room nights expected. The championship will be held in conjunction with the American Volleyball Coaches Association annual convention, which attracts more than 4,500 coaches. One of Kansas City’s selling points: more than 6,000 club teams in a geographic region including Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma.
