68 Inside Sports becomes official partner of the KC Sports Commission
Our newest corporate partner, 68 Inside Sports recently agreed to become the Official Training Facility of the Kansas City Sports Commission. Owned by long-time Chiefs lineman Will Shields, 68 Inside Sports will host several Sports Commission events at their Overland Park location, including a Camp WIN session and a training class for the WIN for KC Triathlon.
The partnership benefits members of both organizations, as KCSC members will receive discount membership rates to 68 Inside Sports, and 68 Inside Sports members will receive discount KCSC membership rates. For more information about 68 Inside Sports.
KC Sports Commission receives Excellence in Corporate Partnering Award
The Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation was humbled and honored to receive the “Excellence in Corporate Partnering” award at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Volunteer Recognition Awards Dinner. The KC Sports Commission has supported The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through a partnership with the Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon. KC Sports Commission welcomes three new board members
Ed Elder is the President/Principal at Grubb & Ellis | The Winbury Group. Elder’s specialty is in the sale and leasing of office and industrial properties along with providing clients expertise on-site selection and development services for new construction in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Elder is a graduate of Kansas State University.
Marc Maun is the chairman and CEO of Bank of Kansas City, a subsidiary of BOK Financial. Prior to his role with Bank of Kansas City, Maun served another BOK Financial subsidiary, Bank of Oklahoma for 21 years. Maun is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Tulsa.
Denny Scott is the Chief Administrative Officer of Burns & McDonnell. He is responsible for the day-to-day administrative needs of the firm. In addition, he negotiates and manages leases on all Burns & McDonnell property across the country and serves as the Facilities Security Officer for Department of Defense and Department of Energy projects. Scott is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University and University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Camp WIN 2010
WIN for KC is gearing up for an exciting summer in 2010! The first session of Camp WIN is underway this week at The Jewish Community Center for girls age 9-12. With 180 campers, 40 high school team captains, 80+ volunteers and 13 different sports, it promises to be a great week! Camp WIN is WIN for KC’s flagship youth event designed to EMPOWER girls by introducing them to 13 new sports and fitness activities. Sport instructors come from local universities, high schools and other area organizations, including UMKC, KU and K-State. Each day features a life skills lesson from WIN’s LIVE ACTIVE peer mentor program focusing on teamwork, goal-setting, resiliency and leadership.
Space is still available for the second session of Camp WIN, June 21-24 at Rockhurst University for girls age 6-8. For more information or to register a camper online, click here. Long-time KCSC volunteer wins prestigious honor
Susan True received the 2010 Harold T. Friermood “Frier” Award, USA Volleyball’s most prestigious honor, at the 65th Annual Dorothy Boyce Awards and Recognition Banquet May 27 in Phoenix. The Frier Award is presented to an individual for long-time (minimum of 30 years), significant service to the sport of volleyball with at least 15 years of leadership positions at the national level.
True, as the assistant director of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), developed a true passion for volleyball that led her on a path to serve on the USA Volleyball Board of Directors continuously from 1983 until 2000, and then again from 2004 to 2008. She served as the USAV Secretary on the Board of Directors from 1985 to 1992.
True and her husband Fred, were unaware of the award and were attending the banquet believing the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) was receiving a grass roots development award. “I am absolutely speechless,” True said after being presented with the award.
True received the KC Sports Commission Volunteer of the Year award in 2007.
Bill’s Basketball Boogie
Lace up your high-tops and prepare to boogie the night away at the College Basketball Experience at Sprint Center in Downtown Kansas City June 11. Entertainment will feature the sounds of Disco Dick and the Mirror Balls so plan for a night packed full of entertainment, excitement and dancing. Buck O’Neil Negro Leagues Baseball Classic – June 18-19
This year the Buck O’Neil Negro Leagues Baseball Classic is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The 18 & under, wooden-bat tournament was co-founded by the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
Teams include: Diamond Masterz – Grandview; Kansas City RBI Monarchs; Millhouse Baseball – Kansas City; Blues Baseball – Lenexa; KC Elite – Lee’s Summit; Missouri Bulldogs – Lee’s Summit; Mill Valley Jaguars – Shawnee; SME Lancers – Overland Park; Richmond Spartans – Richmond; Carter Broadcast – Kansas City; St. Louis RBI; Minnesota RBI and the Indianapolis RBI. Games are free to the public.
Space is available for a FREE Youth Baseball Clinic children ages 8-12. The clinic is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19 at Cleveland Park (43rd and Cleveland, Kansas City, MO). 4th Annual FORE KC! Golf Classic

SportKC PROPS Awards Show
The 38th Annual SportKC PROPS (Party Recognizing Outstanding People of Sports) will take place at the Midland Theatre on Wednesday, July 14 at 5:00 pm with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Dinner and the awards program will follow as the night will conclude with a VIP After-Party set to begin at 9:00 pm.

Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon with Ivy Funds
This year the race will be on Saturday, October 16. A Health & Fitness Expo kicks off marathon weekend at the Crown Center Exhibit Hall A where packet pick-up will be held. Booths are still available if you would like to place your product directly in the hands of 10,000 runners.

WIN for KC Triathlon
The 2010 WIN for KC Women’s Triathlon is set for Saturday, July 31 at Smithville Lake. This event sold-out in mid-March with 850 women and features a 500 meter swim, 10 mile bike and 5k run. The 2009 race hosted 615 women, 360 of which were first-time triathletes! This year, 404 of 850 participants are first-time triathletes who have made the commitment to give it a tri!
Still want to get involved in the fastest growing women’s triathlon in the Midwest? Sign-up to volunteer! Over 180 volunteers are needed in order to make this event a success and we appreciate the generous support of the community! Available volunteer jobs include: pre-race and race-day packet pick-up, bike course monitoring, finish line festival support, kayakers and green team volunteers.
In conjunction with the Women’s Triathlon, WIN for KC launched the Tri Girls program for girls age 6-12. The Tri Girls program is structured to allow girls to complete a triathlon on their own time, at their own pace. Girls then have the opportunity to come watch the premier women’s triathlon in the country, be motivated by seeing role models in action and experience the energy and empowerment of the Women’s Triathlon! All Tri Girls receive a special Tri Girl goody bag complete with a t-shirt, finisher medal and water bottle, plus enjoy a special pancake breakfast and participate in a special Tri Girls Cheering Section!
