The SportsPage 2012 Winter Newsletter
A Message from Kathy Nelson, President & CEO
This has been a year of exciting sports in Kansas City from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championship in March to the MLB All-Star Game in July. The Kansas City Sports Commission\WIN for KC has also experienced a year of successes. We kicked off the year on February 3 with another successful WIN for KC Women’s Sports Awards Celebration with Abby Wambach as the keynote speaker. That same day, registration for the WIN for KC Women’s Triathlon opened and was sold out within 48 hours. Months later we celebrated as 11,000 men and women participated in the Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon with beautiful weather in October.
As I celebrate my first year as president of this organization, I’m proud to share our programs and events have impacted over 150,000 people in 2012. This amazing number included clinics and camps for the youth as we continue to teach them valuable life skills and how to live healthy, active lives.
June 16 we celebrated the life of former President, Kevin Gray, with the Kevin Gray Father’s Day 5K Run/Walk. This inaugural event was attended by over 1,500 who enjoyed a course hitting all three sporting venues in Kansas City, KS, finishing the race on the pitch at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.
We are very excited about our green initiative. Our WIN for KC Women’s Triathlon is an official certified green race by the Council for Responsible Sport (ReSport) and is one of only 34 races (and 1 of only 6 triathlons) in the United States to achieve this designation. We recycle and compost with this event, generating almost no trash for over 3,000 people. We are also stepping up our green initiative at other events such as the Waddell & Reed KC Marathon where over 200 pairs of used shoes were donated.
We are proud of what we accomplished in 2012, and look forward to all the possibilities 2013 has to offer. In March, Kansas City will again host the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship at the Sprint Center. Join us at the inaugural Big 12 5K Fun Run and Family Stroll. The next week, basketball is back at Sprint Center with the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship second and third rounds. And we are pleased to announce a re-energized KC Sports Commission Awards Banquet on April 19. Click here to Nominate your favorite athlete or coach and learn about table sponsorships.
As we close out 2012, I would like to thank the corporations and individuals who support our mission through financial support along with in-kind donations. If you have not yet renewed your membership, I ask that you consider that before the end of the calendar year. If you are not currently a member or are interested in sponsoring one of our events for next year, I ask that you contact Cindy Smith to learn about the benefits and how your contributions make a difference through sports in Kansas City.
I would also like to thank all the thousands who have volunteered time to make every event a success. And thank you to our staff, which I refer to as my “team.” Each event, each clinic, each run that we host is empowering to so many because of the passion and enthusiasm all of you have. Thank you for your hard work.
Cheers to an incredible 2013!
