Internship Program


The Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation hires up to five college interns a session.  These positions are a great way to earn academic credit as well as a wide variety of experience in the sports management field.   Internships are unpaid, but interns have the opportunity to network with high-profile individuals in the community and attend a variety of sports-related activities and events. Preference is given to current students, but recent graduates may also apply.  Out-of-state candidates are welcome, no housing is offered.

Full time internships only (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday - Friday) and some nights and weekends

  4. Assistant to WIN for KC

Summer Internship Program

  1. Submission of resume deadline: February 22
  2. Interviews: February 23 - March 21
  3. Offers: March 24-28

Fall Internship Program

  1. Submission of resume deadline: May 30
  2. Interviews: June 2-27
  3. Offers: June 30 - July 3

 

Position Description

The following is just a small portion of what interns are responsible for at the KC Sports Commission:

  • Assist with promotional activities and event management for special events.
  • Assist with program development including securing donations, organizing volunteers, set-up, tear down at events, picking up garbage and setting out product during races and running errands.
  • Work all Sports Commission and WIN for KC events on- and off-site.
  • Assist the E-Commerce Manager with upkeep of the organization's website, on-line registration and answering on-line registration questions.
  • Develop flyers, correspondence and other print materials such as program booklets, e-mail newsletter, and advertisements.
  • Assist in developing proposals to corporate sponsors, contributors, etc.
  • Assist in marketing strategies regarding membership services and solicitation.
  • Help organize membership benefit events.
  • Perform administrative duties such as retrieving incoming telephone calls, correspondence, assist with the preparation for board meetings, and direct mail coordination.
  • Attend board meetings, staff meetings and meetings for specific events.
  • Fall Internship Program includes the Thanksgiving Day Run which is held on Thanksgiving morning.  All Fall interns MUST work this event which ends around 11 am.

It is important that interns have the ability to develop ideas, follow through on program initiatives, deal effectively with the public, and have a thorough knowledge and understanding of sports.  Experience with desktop publishing programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, InDesign, Photoshop) is highly desirable.  Some events involve heavy lifting and long hours.  Interns are also expected to work at all Sports Commission and WIN for KC special events, which occasionally occur on evenings and weekends.
