Internship Program


The Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation selects up to four interns a session.  These positions are a great way to earn college academic credit as well as a wide variety of experience in the sports management field.   Internships are unpaid, but interns have the opportunity to network with high-profile individuals in the community and attend a variety of sports-related activities and events. Preference is given to current students, but recent graduates may also apply.  Out-of-state candidates are welcome, no housing is offered.

Full time internships only (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday - Friday) and some nights and weekends

The following is just a small portion of what interns are responsible for at the KC Sports Commission:

  • Assist with promotional activities and event management for special events.
  • Assist with program development including securing donations, organizing volunteers, set-up, tear down at events, picking up garbage and setting out product during races and running errands.
  • Work all Sports Commission and WIN for KC events on- and off-site.
  • Assist the eCommerce Department with upkeep of the organization's website, on-line registration and answering on-line registration questions.
  • Develop flyers, correspondence and other print materials such as program booklets, e-mail newsletter, and advertisements.
  • Assist in developing proposals to corporate sponsors, contributors, etc.
  • Assist in marketing strategies regarding membership services and solicitation.
  • Help organize membership benefit events.
  • Perform administrative duties such as retrieving incoming telephone calls, correspondence, assist with the preparation for board meetings, and direct mail coordination.
  • Attend board meetings, staff meetings and meetings for specific events.
  • Fall Internship Program includes the Thanksgiving Day Run which is held on Thanksgiving morning.  All Fall interns MUST work this event which ends around 11 am.  Interns will receive the Monday following Thanksgiving off.

It is important interns have the ability to develop ideas, follow through on program initiatives, deal effectively with the public, and have a thorough knowledge and understanding of sports.  Experience with desktop publishing programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, InDesign, Photoshop) is highly desirable.  Some events involve heavy lifting and long hours.  Interns are also expected to work at all Sports Commission and WIN for KC special events, which occasionally occur on evenings and weekends.


eCommerce/Marketing Intern Position - The intern for the eCommerce/Marketing Department helps keep the website updated, creates new event pages on the event calendar page and uploads photos.  They are responsible for creating and designing e-mail blasts for the Sports Commission and other events in the community.  The intern will answer customer service questions from registrants and also from race directors which includes phone calls and e-mails.  The intern will assist the eCommerce Manager with creating event registration in the on-line registration solution and other miscellaneous duties.  This intern also will assist the Marketing Manager.

Events Intern Position – The interns will assist in organizing events such as the Big 12 5K Fun Run & Family Stroll, Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon, KCSC Awards Banquet, Kevin Gray Father's Day 5K and the Thanksgiving Day Run and Family Stroll at the Sprint Campus.  Duties can include creating and designing e-mail blasts for the events, entering mailed in registration forms into the registration software, updating the marathon website, update the events on the Sports Commission website, help answer customer service calls, help secure donations for fun run goodie bags and other miscellaneous event duties. 

WIN for KC Intern Position – The intern will assist in organizing all WIN for KC events including Camp WIN, WIN for KC Women’s Triathlon and the WIN for KC Women’s Sports Awards Celebration.  This intern will also help with the advocacy of WIN for KC.  The summer intern will have a big part in running Camp WIN during the month of June.  They will help create and design e-mail blasts for the WIN Department along with helping on the social media.
